Quartzite

Quartzite is considered an intrusive and igneous stone formed when sandstone rich in quartz is subjected to high temperatures and pressure in the earth's crust. The two conditions create an ideal environment that facilitates the fusing of quartz grains to form a tough equigranular stone. The stone is so strong that it breaks across quartz grains instead of splitting along the separating boundaries, a characteristic differentiating quartzite from sandstone. Quartzite is generally composed of 90-99% silicone dioxide and other minerals, including iron dioxide and impurities of magnetite, rutile, and zircon. Trace element residue promotes color variation, while its hardness makes it ideal for flooring, countertops, backsplash, wall applications, showers, furniture, and outdoor use. 

Quartzite Care and Maintenance

True quartzite is typically durable and is never corroded by food-based acids such as lemon juice and vinegar. However, stronger acids used for cleaning may corrode quartzite, such as rust remover. Quartzite has a high heat resistance comparable to granite, meaning hot pads or trivets should be used to avoid thermal-induced stress on the stone.

Routine cleaning of quartzite should be done every day using a soft cloth, warm water, and soap. Consult your stone fabricator for specific cleaning needs and products or visit the Natural Stone Institute at www.naturalstoneinstitute.org/consumers.

  • Quartzite is low-maintenance and UV resistant. 
  • Each stone is unique. 
  • There are a range of colors to choose from, including the lighter tones you typically see in marbles.
  • Quartzite has a hardness of 7.0 - 8.0 on the MOHS hardness scale. It is known for its durability. 

Although quartzite is durable, it is not chip-free or indestructible. However, it's more scratch-resistant than quartz, marble, or granite.
