I'm Katrina Morris, founder and principal designer of Katrina & Co., an interior design firm and lifestyle brand nestled in the charming city of Wilmington, North Carolina. We are not your average interior design and I’m thrilled to share a little of our design story with you.
At Katrina & Co. we are all about crafting interior spaces that embody high contrast, infused with a generous dose of southern charm. Our goal is simple – To bring joy and true connection through intentional design. I've been creating beautiful spaces for over a decade, and our designs have graced the pages of national publications like HGTV Magazine, Cottages and Bungalows, The Cottage Journal, ELLE Decor, and more. With an eye for detail and a love for blending sophistication with coastal vibes, my passion for design shines through.
In 2022, my family and I made the big move to Wilmington, North Carolina, to expand our thriving business from Virginia. Now, from our new headquarters in this coastal city, we offer a wide range of services, from commercial and residential design, decor styling consultations, virtual online consultations, holiday decorating, and an online home decor shoppe. We offer all of our services and ship nationwide.
One of the most exciting chapters in our journey is the renovation of a historic mansion, built in 1859, into an Interior Design Studio and Show House. It's a concept that's truly one-of-a-kind, designed to welcome you into an environment curated for everyday living but taken to the next level.
My vision for this studio is to create a beautiful and inspiring experience for everyone who steps inside. When people walk onto the porch and open the front door, I want them to immediately feel welcomed and think, 'This is how I want my home to feel.' It's all about transforming this house into an immersive sensory experience that will instantly bring you into our design world. We aim to make you feel the spaces and help you create a haven in your own home, whether it’s with a simple candle or by purchasing the perfect pillow.
We are proud to be among the few who have ventured into this unique realm. We don't reside here; it's open daily for customers and potential clients to visit. I've meticulously curated the decor, lighting, furniture, and finishes, just as you'd find in a magazine-worthy home. Each room is thoughtfully decorated for visual intrigue, and every item is available for purchase (we ship nationwide if you are not local). Our signature style and exclusive designs are woven throughout the home, providing a truly inspirational experience.
The heart of any home is the kitchen, and we've carefully chosen materials to make it truly remarkable. Our island features a stunning waterfall design using all-natural Phyllite, a blend of soapstone and slate. What makes this even more special is our partnership with Francini Marble and Granite Company, where we handpicked the slab. They offered a fantastic selection, and their friendly and knowledgeable staff, especially Sean, the Wilmington manager, made the experience amazing.

Imagine a room where deep greens or blacks meet crisp whites or light neutrals. This stark difference creates high contrast, making it visually striking. It adds drama, highlights key features, exudes elegance, creates depth, and is versatile to fit various styles. In a nutshell, high contrast design is about making a room exciting, elegant, and engaging. It’s a total vibe.
2. Southern Charm: What design details encapsulate ‘Southern Charm?’
Think classic wainscoting, beadboard paneling, muted colors, antique furniture, and airy spaces. There is no clutter and walls are adorned with large signature art that tells a story. Our design studio brings these elements to life by combining moody hues and rich textures with coastal influences, creating a modern coastal design with a touch of refined rustic and Southern elegance.
3. How to combine Southern Charm and High Contrast
Combining these two styles is a thrilling challenge. Start with classic Southern elements in bold colors. Mix antique furniture with modern, high-contrast pieces, and play with rich textures and patterns. Finding the right balance between classic Southern elements and contemporary high-contrast design creates a space that's inviting and visually striking.
