Since writing this blog back in 2021, porcelain slabs have continued to gain popularity in the design field.  Their seamless and versatile application in various design projects make it a "go-to" specification amongst many design professionals. The large-format slabs, typically measuring larger than traditional tiles, offer a sleek and modern aesthetic with minimal grout lines. They can be used for countertops, backsplashes, wall cladding, and even furniture due to their durability and resistance to stains, scratches, and high temperatures. Recently, we've seen porcelain slabs used in fireplace surrounds, vertical gardens, staircases, exterior cladding, bathtub surrounds, ceiling accents, and outdoor kitchens! The versatility of porcelain allows for a wide range of creative applications limited only by imagination and design considerations.

Latest Trends in Porcelain

Over the past decade tile has been a staple in the design industry. From eye catching patterns to neutral wood tones, tile provides versatility and function. In 2021 things are getting even more exiting, and we are loving it! Although porcelain has been around for awhile, its popularity is just now gaining traction. Whether you’re upgrading your space or starting from scratch, here are a few porcelain design trends to consider for your next project:

1. Large feature walls

We love using large porcelain slabs as art to immediately elevate the aesthetic of a space without needing a ton of material. Thanks to modern day technology porcelain slabs are now hitting the American market making a huge impact, literally. At 63” x 126” these slabs are perfect for a wide range of applications. Available in two thickness, 6mm and 12mm, large feature walls truly offer the best opportunity to showcase these beautiful designs. Think fireplaces, niches, stove vent hoods, showers...the possibilities are limitless.

2. Countertops

Countertops are a bit more of an obvious place to install porcelain, however consider stepping things up a notch by creating a stunning focal point with a waterfall edge on the kitchen island. This look provides a seamless transition between counter to floor, all while adding an elegant design statement for both the contemporary and traditional decorating styles. For an even cleaner look, consider forgoing the traditional 4” backsplash and integrate a full height porcelain backsplash. Goodbye grout lines and hello WOW-factor. Not to mention the added benefit of an easy-to-clean surface!

3. Details, baby!

As a designer I am passionate about detail. I strive for exceptional luxury both tailored and timeless for each individual client. Porcelain is the optimal design solution, merging high-end design with budget. Look for opportunities to call out special spots of the home – for example, a large cased opening. A porcelain cladded cased opening instantly add a luxurious, custom feel to any space.

Another look we love – porcelain baseboards. Porcelain baseboards are dramatic and very effective in highlighting small spaces.

Alternatively, if you aren’t ready to commit to a large scale installation, create a custom look with porcelain trim around a shelving unit or porcelain table top.

4. Bathrooms

Tired of cleaning heavy grouted tile floors or shower walls? Let’s be honest, who isn’t? Just another reason why we love specifying large format porcelain slabs for bathrooms! Waterproof, lightweight, and extra large, porcelain is perfect in creating long, clean runs without seams. Bookmatched slabs are a beautiful focal point for a master bathroom and can easily handle harsh cleaning agents and abrasion. Another idea we love – custom stone sinks and vanities. Be ready to wow your house guests! A custom bathroom sink in a powder room or pool bath provides the perfect opportunity for a beautiful, one-of-a kind, integrated look.

In sum, the emergence of oversized slabs is resulting in a huge comeback for porcelain. Extremely popular for kitchen, bathrooms, and focal walls, porcelain has been engineered to withstand almost any environment.

Here are few of the pros when working with porcelain:

  • low porosity for stain resistance
  • scratch and chip resistant
  • cleanability – no special solutions needed
  • withstands heat
  • large slabs create a seamless design with fewer grout lines

*Remember, details matter. So focus on highlighting those details with luxurious accents like porcelain!
