Granite the usually first choice of modern homeowners when they need to choose the best material for their kitchen and bathroom countertops. This beautiful stone has long been the gold standard of custom home builders, and home renovations often include the addition of granite countertops as well as back splash areas.

Granite is not limited to countertops in the kitchen and bath, but the use of granite tiles has become increasingly popular in flooring applications.

Granite is a beautiful, strong and durable stone that is available in an incredible array of colors and patterns. In fact, no two slabs are exactly alike since granite is a natural stone that has not been manufactured.

The color palate ranges all the way from nearly white, reds, browns and golds to black, and most granite sparkles with small flecks of mica.

There is a common belief that granite can be damaged by water and other liquids that can leave a stain. The material does need to be properly sealed to protect against food stains, but the surface is nearly impenetrable once sealed.

Granite cleans up easily by simply wiping with soft cloth and soapy water followed by a rinse. Granite is also resistant to heat and will not be damaged when a hot pan is placed directly on the surface.

Granite can be finished in a variety of ways including polishing and brushing. Polished granite is very slippery so should probably not be used for flooring.

Brushing gives granite a silky texture, but it will require more maintenance and care due to the more porous surface.

Granite can be used in various ways throughout the home, but is also a beautiful choice for the outdoor kitchen.

Just as for all indoor applications, outdoor granite should be properly sealed to protect it from the elements. Although granite can be costly, homeowners feel it's beauty and durability make natural stone well worth the expense.
