Granite Etching: Causes and How to Fix Them

16 Jul, 2018 |

Granite countertops in your kitchen become an exquisite focal point in the heart of your home. With the investment you made and their prominence in the room, you’ll want to take precautions to maintain their beauty and avoid damage from etching. We’ll discuss what the most common cause is of etching and how it can be fixed.

Causes and Prevention of Granite Etching

Acidic liquids are the most common reason for etching of granite (which is a chemical reaction). The culprits include:

Cleaners
Although many people praise vinegar's effectiveness, it is NOT appropriate for cleaning granite. Not only can this natural cleaner cause etching, it can also destroy the original finish of your granite. Bleach and ammonia should also not be used. The best cleaner to use it a gentle soap with warm water. However, if you must use a cleaning product, read the warnings and directions or contact the manufacturer to make sure it is safe to use on your granite countertop.
Food and Drinks
Acidic fruit, juice, coffee, wine and soda can also cause etching. If prepping food, you should use a cutting board and if you spill, it should be wiped up immediately to prevent etching.

How Do I Fix Granite Etchings?

Ideally, prevention is the best cure, but if you should find your granite etched and in need of repair, here’s what you can do. First, wipe the area clean with a wet rag. Next, sand the area lightly to remove the finish. Clean the area again with a wet rag to remove debris. Then, using a putty knife, fix divots or etchings using an epoxy that is designed specifically for repairing granite. Allow the epoxy the dry for the recommended time. Finally, apply granite finish to seal the repair.

If you feel more comfortable with someone else repairing the etching, contact a stone restoration professional.
