Comparing Appearance of Marble and Quartzite

In their most natural state, the colors of marble and quartzite usually range from white to medium gray. Their exposure to other minerals can lead to the background colors on these stones changing, which is where they set themselves apart from each other. Marble's most common colors are white, green, pink, gray, and black. Quartzite's most common colors are white, purple, yellow, black, brown, green, and blue.

Durability, Stain Resistance, and Scratch Resistance - How do Marble and Quartzite Stack Up?

Etching is when acid comes into contact with calcite in the stone, causing the rock to be dull and look damaged. Everyday household products like ketchup, juices, vinegar, and basic cleaning supplies may cause etching. This only affects marble, as quartzite is safe from all of these items, except for cleaning supplies that contain hydrofluoric acid.

Neither marble nor quartzite has a significant advantage over the other when it comes to being stain resistant, and it is recommended that you seal your marble or quartzite countertops every year. However, quartzite is much stronger and more durable than marble. Quartzite has a seven rating on the Moh's Hardness Scale compared to marble's rating of three. This means that quartzite is less likely to be scratched than marble.

You may be wondering if quartzite is the better of the two options. After all, it seems to rank highly for quality and durability. As with anything, there are pros and cons.

For instance, depending on your tastes, the softness of marble may actually feel more like a bonus to you than an issue. Part of marble's charm is that it has a patina that evolves. If you are sentimental or appreciate your stone's surface having a unique story, marble's softer surface can be an enormous appeal.
