How to Make Your Kitchen Yours While Renting

13 Dec, 2016 | Boise |

Time in the kitchen is just part of life for anyone who doesn't want to survive on take-out, but in many rental kitchens, those hours can seem pretty grim. Fortunately, there are ways to make your kitchen feel like yours even if it technically isn't. Try these tips to get you there.

Light It Up

If your kitchen is like most rentals, the dim fluorescent lighting isn't doing it any favors. Add a plug-in wall sconce or decorative wall sconce to give you something to see by. If you're really feeling ambitious, you could even swap out the overhead light. Be sure to keep the original light for when you move out!

Get It Organized

Nobody likes rummaging through stacks of precariously-balanced cookware. Additional racks in the cabinets can make it easier to find what you need, while hooks on the walls can free up more space. If you've got the room, consider getting a rolling kitchen island for additional storage and counter space.

Add Some Flair

While your walls have to stay neutral, there's no reason you can't add colors with accessories. A bright rug can offer some comfort in front of the sink or stove, and it's easy to coordinate with dishtowels or even a teapot. Don't forget to add some artwork to give yourself something to look at while cooking and cleaning up.

It's All Temporary

Some changes can look permanent even if you know they're not. Wall decals can add a nice border or mimic a backsplash while still being easy to remove when you have to move. For the truly industrious, cabinet knobs and pulls are usually easy to replace with nothing more than a screwdriver. Just don't forget to keep the original hardware!

Bring In Some Life

Something green and living always adds a little cheer to an apartment kitchen. Keep it next to the window if you have one. If not, try getting two plants and rotating them between the kitchen and a window in another room so they both get light. If even that won't work for you, though, there are plenty of good-looking fake options these days, too.

Whether your rental situation is long-term or just for now, there's no reason you can't make the kitchen feel like your very own.
